A week long wool festival in Welwyn Garden City’s Howard Centre with many well known independent yarn sellers and designers, displaying their latest yarns and exciting new patterns for winter, plus workshops, book signings and much more.

At the Wool-in Garden City Wool Festival we are excited to have a varied and interesting programme of workshops, talks and demonstrations: The festival starts on Friday 19th January , 5.30 - 8 pm with our Preview Evening and tickets can be bought here . Saturday 20th January

Meet The Designers Talk

Jane Crowfoot, Gurinder Kaur Hatchard and Kath Andrews will be talking about their crochet and knitting patterns and their creative journey into designing.

This talk is free, but places are limited and you will need to show booking confirmation to attend.

2.30 - 5 pm

Embroidery on crochet with Anna Nikipirowicz This is a great class to try embroidery on crochet. During the workshop you will make a small wall hanging. This class is suitable for people who are comfortable with holding a yarn and hook. Kits will be provided, but participants will need to bring a 3mm hook and scissors.

Sunday 21st January

Introduction to Brioche Knitting with Kath Andrews. Brioche knitting is a distinctive knitted ribbing technique that is recognizable by its interesting texture. In this workshop you will learn how to achieve this effect by alternating columns of slipped stitches with yarnovers and knit stitches.

Handouts and yarn will be provided, but participants will need to bring 5mm circular needles (ideally 60 - 80 cm long).

1 – 3 pm   Amigurumi Crochet with Julia Dudrenec
 

In this workshop you will learn the basics of amigurumi crochet, and make your own cute little cherries from the Ricorumi Fresh Friends collection. We will cover increasing and decreasing stitches, working in the round, creating a magic circle, and reading amigurumi patterns. Julia will also provide you with lots of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

 Please note this workshop is not suitable for complete beginners – you must be able to crochet a UK double crochet stitch.

 All tools and materials are provided including the gorgeous Ricorumi Spin Spin variegated cotton yarn.  Cost £40

3 – 4 pm Introduction to Tunisian Crochet with Diana Bensted

In this workshop you will learn how to make a Tunisian crochet coaster. Tunisian Crochet is worked on a special long hook with a stopper on the end, so that the stitches stay on the hook. Once started you work with a forward and backward pass, keeping the right side of the work facing at all times. Using Tunisian simple stitch, this class focuses on colour changing within the rows. This workshop is for those who have crocheted before and can make a chain.

 Tunisian crochet hook provided.

Introduction to Sock Knitting with Jane

Hickman.

Knit a mini sock as a decoration and learn how a knitted sock is constructed.

A pattern and yarn will be provided, the pattern gives two heel and two toe options. Participants will need to bring a 4mm circular needle (for magic loop), or a set of 4mm double pointed needles.

Please note this is not a beginner’s workshop – you must be able to knit in the round to get the most from this workshop.

Minimum of 2, maximum of 4 attendees. Cost £40 per attendee.

Join Kim from The Haberdashery in Hitchin for a tutorial on Arm Knitting.
Learn a fantastic new skill and walk away with your very own chunky knitted throw, made on your very own arms!
No experience necessary.  All materials provided.  You will get to choose from an assortment of colours of vegan acrylic yarn.  Cost £70 (includes yarn to the value of £55)

Learn to Knit a Square on the diagonal with Naomi Donovan

In this workshop you will learn to knit the basic knit stitch, increase and decrease your stitches to make a basic square in the diagonal from corner to corner. 

This class is ideal for beginners, who have maybe tried the basics of knitting but would like to progress further.  

All materials are provided.

Learn to Crochet Granny Squares workshop with Helen Ingram The Granny Square workshop is an ideal introduction to crochet and is suitable for complete beginners. You will learn how to hold the yarn and crochet hook, make chain stitches, and treble crochet stitches and crochet a granny square. Crochet hook and all materials are provided.

1 pm – 3 pm Crochet and Chat, Knit and Natter

An opportunity to bring along your current project and sit and knit or crochet with other like-minded crafters. Free to attend, but please book your place as space is limited.

All Day Spinning and Needle Felting Demonstration by the Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers Guild

Rag Rug Making for Beginners with Ragged Life In this 3 hour beginners class, you will learn all the skills you need to be able to make unique rag rugs, cushions and art to spice up your home. Experts from award-winning craft brand Ragged Life will teach you how to use the rag rug equipment, how to select and prepare materials and how to do two traditional techniques of British rag rugging, all while making a jolly rag rug sunflower cushion front. You'll never look at people's clothing the same way again!

Cost £40 per person. Materials provided & no experience necessary. Age12+

Introduction to Shawl Knitting with Jem Arrowsmith. During this class we will explore 4 different shawl shapes that are commonly used for shawl knitting and knit mini-samples of these shapes. As we knit the samples you will see that each shape follows a simple formula to create the shaping, and that once you have worked a number of rows and established the shaping stitches, you could easily continue to knit a full size shawl! The class will be taught using the English Style of knitting and is suitable for knitters who are comfortable with knit and purl stitches.

Cost £40. 

Please note you will need to bring with you DK yarn and a 4mm 60 cm circular needle.

Easily Fix Knitting Mistakes with Jem Arrowsmith. What to do when Knitting Goes Wrong! As a beginner knitter it can be very frustrating when stitches are accidentally dropped, or a new one suddenly appears on the needles. In this class we will look at some of the common problems that can occur when learning to knit, how to spot them and how to easily fix them and get you back on track. This class is suitable for beginner knitters who can knit and purl. Ahead of the session you will need to bring with you a small stockinette swatch using a smooth Double Knit or Chunky yarn on a pair of 4mm or 5mm needles, in a plain colour.

Mosaic Crochet with Diana Bensted. Learn this popular new technique with us. Worked in one direction, and using just chains, double crochet, and treble stitches you can create beautiful geometric patterns. In the workshop we will work a sample to learn the technique, reading a chart and stitches, you will be able to use the pattern to create a square panel which could then be made into a bag or cushion front. You will also be shown how to create a double border to enclose all the ends. You will need to know the basic crochet stitches (tr, dc, ch) and how to work into the foundation chain. Crochet hook and materials provided.

Friday 26th January

10 - 12.30 pm 

Hand Spinning on a drop spindle with Jane Hickman. This 2.5 hour workshop is designed for the absolute beginner who is curious about how yarn is produced from animal fleece and wants an introduction to hand spinning with a drop spindle. You will learn about fleece, and how to prepare it for spinning, before you get to try spinning for yourself using colourful fibre and a drop spindle that you can take home with you (to practice some more). No previous experience is necessary, and you do not need to bring anything with you except your enthusiasm!

Minimum of 2, maximum of 4 attendees.
